Standard Jazz Ensemble / Big Band: 5,4,4,4 Piano: RH - Voicings, LH - Chord Chart Bass: Written out with chord changes provided.
Range: (C1=Middle C) Trpt. Eb3 (opt A3), Tbn. G1
Style: 16th Note Rock / Latin
"Rock Modern Ode" is a twisted arrangement of "Ode to Joy," the famous melody used by Beethoven for his 9th Symphony. In my arrangement, the feel shifts back and forth from 16th note rock to latin, a la Frank Mantooth, who has been a tremendous influence on my arranging. Also unusual about this arrangement are the phrase endings, which have been extended, and the unusual chord progressions that are prevalent in many of my other arrangements. The solo is in the first alto. Although there are no written repeats for solos, one may be added by looping m.45 and m.56, using the drum fill to separate solos. The rock rhythms are a little difficult to pull off, but this tune should prove a rewarding experience for any big band.
