ASBOA Contest List Grade 2
Kaleidoscope was commissioned by Dee Branch, Director of Bands at Murfressboro High School. This music is written in honor of Justin Terrell, a sixteen year old trumpet player in the Murfreesboro Band. Justin was diagnosed in January, 1997 with Ewings Sarcoma. This past year (year of publication), Justin has undergone aggressive treatments which include chemotherapy, radiation, and many tranfusions. Mrs. Branch and her band students have prayed for Justin and have followed his progress vigilantly. As a tribute to his miracle recovery, the band wanted music of celebration.
The name Kaleidoscope comes from the idea of constant change. The notes included in the score by the composer give helpful details as to how this theme is evident in the writing of the piece.
Justin is a very important part of the city of Murfreesboro, the school, and the band. Kaleidoscope is his miracle in music.
