A few years ago, I saw an article on the discovery of a flute made of bird bone in a cave in Germany. They dated the instrument to be over 42,000 years old. At that time, it was the oldest musical instrument yet discovered. Researchers discovered the flute was designed to play a pentatonic scale. This fascinated me because pentatonic scales are used in all types of music from every part of the world. Researchers also believe that the flute was probably used for religious ceremonies. Because it was designed to play a pentatonic scale, you can play Amazing Grace, a song written in the late 1700s, over 43,000 years after the flute was made.
I wrote several pieces based on pentatonic scales. I harmonized these tunes with non-traditional harmonies. Traveling Grace is one of the tunes that came out of this period. It is my attempt to write a modern folk song.
